A Memorable Encounter in Kohomba Kema

I Experienced an unforgettable moment in the heart of Yala National. This captivating story unveils a remarkable wildlife sighting that unfolded before my lens as a passionate wildlife photographer, providing a glimpse into the awe-inspiring world of Yala’s inhabitants.

On a day originally destined for a factory inspection in Embilipitiya, the allure of Yala National Park proved irresistible. With just a 1.5-hour journey from Yala to my factory in Embilipitiya, I decided to catch a glimpse of leopards before I left for embiliptiya, deciding to remain in the park and seize the opportunity for adventure. Little did I know that this impromptu choice would lead to an extraordinary encounter.

Around 8:30 AM in the morning, mere meters from the main road, my eyes were drawn to a breathtaking sight. Resting on the branches of an incredibly thin tree were two leopard cubs, their proximity to my camera lenses enhancing the sense of wonder – super close! These cubs, two of three belonging to the intrepid Shasha, the leopard mother, confidently perched on the delicate branches, seemingly undeterred by their precarious surroundings.

Shasha, a bold and courageous leopard mother, displayed a fearless nature, never hesitating to venture out even in the presence of jeeps. Surrounded by a cluster of 20 or 30 vehicles, she fearlessly led her cubs, showcasing her unwavering bravery. Notably, the two cubs exhibited surprising behavior as they fearlessly walked along slender branches of one of the tallest trees, resting without concern for their height.

As I continued their observation, I was rewarded with the discovery of the elusive third cub nestled among the branches. The family unit was now complete, and through careful observation and patience, the mother leopard, Shasha, was spotted on a nearby tree as well. This remarkable sighting captured my heart, as it portrayed the inherent tranquility and freedom of the leopard family.

The resulting wildlife photograph is a testament to the captivating allure of nature, showcasing the relaxing and liberated spirit of Shasha and her cubs. It encapsulates the harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife and serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing and preserving our natural heritage.
