This captivating photograph at ketagalwala, Yala captures a rare and enchanting moment of sisterhood between two young leopards. With their graceful movements, Julie and Jessica, 1.5-year-old female siblings, engage in an exhilarating dance or friendly sparring session, showcasing their playful nature and agility.

Taken during the serene and unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the photograph reflects the tranquility of the park, devoid of the usual hustle and bustle of safari jeeps. In this quietude, the leopards feel comfortable venturing onto the road, embracing the freedom granted by the reduced human presence.

I and my fellow trackers meticulously planned to acquire the ‘first entry ticket’ which was only offered as early as 4 AM seizing the opportunity to witness and capture this extraordinary encounter. 5 minutes into the park at the crack of dawn, we were greeted by the sight of a stunning leopard perched upon a rock. Moments later, another leopard emerged from the surrounding trees, setting the stage for an unexpected spectacle.

In a twist of fate, the leopard on the rock descended, and Julie and Jessica engaged in a delightful display of playful interaction. Their fluid movements and synchronized gestures mesmerized us, who watched in awe as the sisters unleashed their boundless energy.

For over an hour, I had the privilege of documenting this captivating dance between Julie and Jessica. Their coats, adorned with striking patterns, shimmered in the soft light, accentuating their elegance and the beauty of their bond. The photograph not only offers a glimpse into the remarkable behavior of these elusive creatures but also serves as a testament to the importance of preserving their natural habitats.
