Yala national park

One of the most famous national parks in Sri Lanka, Yala is home to the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, as well as elephants, sloth bears, and a plethora of bird species. Jeep safaris and camping expeditions are popular activities here. The peak season is from February to July, but the park is open year-round.

Interesting fact: During the months of July to September, Yala National Park offers a prime opportunity for leopard sightings. This period coincides with the region’s dry season when the absence of rain compels leopards to seek out specific locations within the park.

To satisfy their thirst, leopards gravitate towards both man-made and natural water ponds strategically positioned throughout Yala National Park. These water sources are diligently replenished by the Wildlife Department of Sri Lanka, ensuring a consistent water supply for the park’s wildlife.

It is during this time that visitors can witness the remarkable sight of leopards frequenting these watering holes.

The presence of leopards at these water ponds serves as a testament to the delicate balance between wildlife and their habitat, as well as the dedicated conservation efforts undertaken by the wildlife department. Exploring Yala National Park during this period unveils a fascinating glimpse into the natural rhythms of life and the resourcefulness of these elusive predators.
